The Straight Run

A single linear island against a wall or facing the yard: grill, side burner, storage, and a working counter. This is the right first outdoor kitchen for most homes — it delivers nearly all the utility at roughly half the cost of a wrapped layout, and it leaves the patio open rather than walling it in.

L-Shape with Bar

The linear run plus a return leg carrying bar seating at raised height. The return is what turns a cooking appliance into a place people gather — whoever is cooking stops being isolated behind the grill. It also gives you a genuine prep zone separated from the hot zone, which matters more than any single appliance.

Full Outdoor Room

Kitchen, bar, refrigeration, and a covered structure treated as a single design rather than assembled in stages. Shade, lighting, fans, misting, and power all get engineered together and routed before any block goes up — which is the only way to end with no visible conduit, no surface-mounted anything, and no regrets about where the sun lands at 5 PM.

We frame in CMU block or welded steel stud, never wood. Wood in an Arizona outdoor kitchen is a termite invitation and a moisture problem around the sink, and it moves enough with heat cycling to crack whatever veneer is attached to it. Block is heavier, slower, and the reason the thing is still square in fifteen years.

Gas and electrical get done properly and pulled as permits. A natural gas run to a grill is a plumbing permit and an inspection in every Valley municipality; outdoor circuits must be GFCI protected, and a refrigerator or ice maker wants its own dedicated run. Contractors who skip this leave you with an unpermitted gas line that surfaces at resale, during an insurance claim, or both.

Everything that will ever need service gets an access panel — shutoff valves, the back of the refrigerator, the drain trap. It is a fifteen-minute decision during construction and the difference between a $200 service call and demolishing a block wall to reach a leaking fitting.

The four choices
that decide it.

304 vs 430 Stainless

304 only

430 stainless is magnetic, cheaper, and rusts — visibly, at the welds and fastener points, usually within two or three Arizona summers. 304 has the nickel content to resist it. Every big-box value grill and most of what gets quoted as an 'upgrade package' is 430. Bring a magnet to any showroom: if it sticks, walk.

Countertop Choice

Engineered quartz is the trap. It is excellent indoors and it fails outdoors in Arizona — the resin binder yellows and breaks down under direct UV, and most manufacturers void the warranty for exterior use outright. Granite, quartzite, porcelain, or sealed concrete all hold up. We steer nearly everyone to granite or quartzite.

Smoke & Orientation

Prevailing wind in the Valley is out of the east most mornings and shifts west in the afternoon. Put the grill on the wrong end and every gathering sits in the smoke, or it rolls straight through the patio door into the house. We site the hot zone against the actual wind pattern at your address, not against a floor plan.

Task Lighting

Most outdoor kitchens are used after dark for half the year, and most are lit by a single wall pack twenty feet behind the cook, which puts their own shadow on the cutting board. We run dimmable task lighting under the overhang plus separate ambient lighting for the seating, pre-wired in conduit before the veneer goes on.

Granite & Quartzite

Natural stone with no resin binder to break down, so direct UV is simply not a factor. Handles a hot pan straight off the grill. Needs sealing every year or two against citrus and oil staining. This is what we install unless there is a specific reason not to.

Porcelain Slab

Completely non-porous, zero sealing, and available in large-format slabs with very fine seams for a contemporary look. Excellent stain and UV resistance. More brittle at unsupported overhangs, so bar returns need a substrate detail — which we build in rather than discovering later.

Engineered Quartz

Beautiful indoors, wrong here. The polymer resin that binds it yellows and degrades under direct Arizona UV, and Caesarstone, Silestone, and Cambria all exclude exterior installation from warranty coverage. If a contractor quotes quartz for your patio, they either have not read the warranty or are counting on you not to.

A straight-run island with a quality built-in grill, storage, and stone counter starts around $8,000–$14,000. An L-shape with bar seating and refrigeration typically runs $14,000–$26,000. Full outdoor rooms with integrated shade, lighting, and beverage centers go north of $26,000. Appliances are the widest variable — the same block island can carry $2,000 or $12,000 of equipment.
The structure usually does not, but the trades almost always do. Running a natural gas line requires a plumbing permit and inspection in every Valley city we work in, and adding outdoor circuits requires an electrical permit. We pull both as part of the project. An unpermitted gas line is the kind of thing that surfaces at resale or during an insurance claim, which is the worst possible time.
No, and this is the single most common expensive mistake we get called to look at. Engineered quartz uses a polymer resin binder that yellows and breaks down under direct UV — and the major manufacturers explicitly void warranty coverage for exterior installations. Use granite, quartzite, porcelain, or sealed concrete instead. All four are genuinely fine outdoors here.
Natural gas if your home has a meter — no tanks to swap, no running out mid-cook, and lower cost per BTU. The tradeoff is a trenched run from the meter and a permit, which is why it has to be decided before construction rather than after. Propane is the right answer when the run would be unreasonably long or the kitchen sits far from the house.
Two to four weeks on site for most builds. Block and concrete work takes a few days plus cure time, countertop templating and fabrication adds one to two weeks on its own, and inspections have to slot in between trades. Appliance lead times are the usual schedule risk — we order equipment before breaking ground for exactly that reason.
In Arizona, almost always. An uncovered outdoor kitchen is unusable from roughly 11 AM to 6 PM in summer, which removes most of the hours you would want it. Covering it also protects the appliances and counters from the UV that ages them. If both are in the plan, we design them together — the utility routing, lighting, and fan placement all get simpler and cleaner when they are not retrofitted.
