Paver Driveways: Engineering for Vehicle Loads

A driveway is not a thick patio. Base depth, paver thickness, laying pattern, and edge detail all change when a vehicle drives on it.

Paver driveways are one of the highest-impact upgrades available to a Phoenix-area home—they transform curb appeal instantly and, built correctly, outlast poured concrete by a wide margin. Built incorrectly, they rut, spread, and settle within a couple of seasons.

The difference comes down to treating a driveway as a pavement structure rather than as a large patio.

Base Depth Is the First Decision

Our standard residential patio base is 4 inches of compacted aggregate. A driveway is not that.

For standard passenger vehicles on typical East Valley subgrade we build a minimum of 8 inches of compacted Class 2 aggregate base, and we go deeper where the subgrade tests poor or where the client parks heavier vehicles—an RV pad, a work truck, or a boat trailer will concentrate loads that a sedan never approaches.

The base is placed in 3-4 inch lifts, moisture-conditioned, and compacted with a reversible plate compactor rather than a light single-direction unit. Density is the entire objective.

Geotextile Separation

On driveways we install a woven geotextile fabric between subgrade and aggregate base. Its job is separation: it prevents fine subgrade soil from migrating up into the aggregate under repeated loading, which is a slow-motion failure mode that hollows out the base over years. It's an inexpensive layer that meaningfully extends service life.

Paver Thickness and Type

Driveway pavers should be a minimum of 2 3/8 inches (60mm) thick. The 50mm pavers commonly used on patios and walkways are not rated for vehicular traffic, and using them on a driveway is a specification error you'll pay for later in cracked units.

We also prefer smaller, more interlocking unit shapes for driveways. A large-format slab paver looks beautiful on a patio but has fewer joints per square foot to distribute load—the exact opposite of what a driveway wants.

Laying Pattern Matters Structurally

This surprises people: pattern is a structural decision on a driveway, not only an aesthetic one.

  • Herringbone (45° or 90°): The strongest pattern for vehicular applications. The interlocking geometry resists the horizontal forces created by braking, accelerating, and turning wheels. This is our default.
  • Running bond: Acceptable in low-traffic areas, but continuous joint lines can creep under repeated turning loads.
  • Basketweave and stack bond: Attractive, structurally weak under vehicles. We use these as accent panels, not as the driving field.

Edge Restraint Under Load

Every wheel that turns on a driveway pushes the pavers outward. The perimeter is under constant lateral force, and light-duty plastic restraint that works fine on a walkway will fail here.

We use a concrete haunch—a continuous troweled concrete edge against the outside face of the perimeter course, set on the compacted base and buried below finish grade. It's invisible when the job is done and it's the reason the driveway edge is still straight in year twenty.

The Apron and the Street Transition

Where the driveway meets the public street, jurisdiction usually shifts to the municipality. Gilbert, Chandler, and Mesa each have their own standards for driveway aprons, and work in the right-of-way typically requires a permit. We handle this as part of the project rather than leaving a homeowner to discover it after the fact.

Why Pavers Over Concrete Here

Poured concrete driveways in Arizona crack. Not sometimes—as a matter of routine, driven by thermal cycling, soil movement, and shrinkage. Control joints manage where it cracks, not whether.

A paver driveway has a joint every few inches by design. It flexes with soil movement instead of fracturing, and when a utility repair or a vehicle fluid stain requires attention, individual units lift out and reset with no patch line. That repairability is the practical argument, and after two decades in Arizona sun it's usually the decisive one.

Before You Sign a Bid

Ask three questions: What is the compacted base depth? What thickness are the pavers? What is the edge restraint detail? A contractor building a driveway correctly will answer all three immediately and specifically.
